Take care of your bathroom and your bathroom will take care of you!
With adequate care, all surfaces and components will perform better and last longer, here are a few tips...
Make sure to install a suitable extractor fan to remove all condensation which will settle and cause a build-up of mould and rust. A mere 5-10 minute shower can generate up to 2 pints of moisture in the air, so a mere open window is not enough to keep your bathroom dry.
Shower doors need to be checked regularly to ensure optimal performance. Something as simple as making sure the shower door is fully closed when showering can help prevent seals from coming loose maintaining your shower for longer.
Tip: Use a wiper to clean down your shower glass every week or so, this is a great way to stop the build-up of limescale.
Tile surfaces needed to be grouted to prevent moisture from getting in between the tiles. Tile grout can be easily damaged after installation. Pay attention to grout lines, especially when giving your bathroom a deep clean, every so often you will need to repair grout using suitable ceramic tile grout and a scraping tool.
Tip: Protect it by coating it with 2 coats of lithium, you should ask your tiler about this, it is an easy process and will prevent your grout from becoming discoloured or mouldy.
Natural cleaning solutions
Products such as bleach, Mr Muscle, Cillit Bang etc, are incredibly strong and acidic and can go on to damage bathroom taps, seat hinges, accessories etc. Try using non-acidic, natural or eco-friendly products as alternatives in order to give your bathroom equipment a longer life. Inexpensive cleaning solutions such as vinegar diluted with water works as a great alternative.
Limescale is a common issue for many households, particularly in those places where hard water is often used. When there is a big build-up of limescale use a small cleaning brush, or even an old toothbrush to gently scrub the affected areas. For a natural solution to deal with limescale around shower accessories and taps use vinger diluted with water, pour into a cloth, and gently dab and wipe away the dirt, not only will this help maintain and preserve your bathroom accessories and prevent further damage it won't damage anything.
Know how to fix common problems
Knowing how to carry out tasks that are of common occurrence is also important to help save money and time as well as keeping on top of maintenance that can be fixed quickly rather than waiting on a plumber. A simple example would be a blocked drain that usually occurs quite commonly especially if you do not install protective meshes around plug holes to filter out large amounts of debris. Using vinegar, baking soda and water is a quick, easy and cheap way to tackle this issue, simply pour a pot of boiling water down the drain, followed by half a cup of baking soda and vinegar, wait around 10 minutes before flushing a pot of boiling water down the drain.
Cleaning the bathroom at least once a week is a must, however there tends to be many things that are overlooked, such as hard to reach spots, behind the sink, taps, plug holes etc. these areas tend to become mouldy over time and must be cleaned regularly to help maintain the original quality. After cleaning leave the bathroom door open and keep it well ventilated until it is completely dry.
