Moving Home During The Festive Period

The festive period can be an incredibly busy time for moving house and having handed over the keys to thousands of homeowners over the past 130 years, we’ve picked up some handy tips along the way to help you get settled into your new home just in time for Christmas, with presents under the tree, and the fridge full of festive treats.

Be clear on timescales

During the festive period, Zoopla reports that it takes an average of 56 days to sell your home. However, it’s important to remember that time scales can often be out of control when moving home, with many factors that can occur and holt the process. You can always communicate your timescale wishes to the estate agent and solicitors who can then communicate this to the seller.

Pick a buyer who’s ready to move

For sellers, if you’re in a position where you have a few offers on the table, then, along with the price they are offering, you may also want to consider the position of the buyer. If you have a buyer that has their own property to sell then find out their current situation, do they have a property that is currently under offer? These are important questions you should be asking before taking your property off the market. Estate agents should be able to advise you of their position

Confirm your moving date in advance

Confirming a move-in date well in advance is key here. In legal terms, this would mean the time gap between the exchange of contracts and the completion. Why is this important? Because it allows you to book your removal company in advance! If you are currently in the process of selling your property and are in need of a local removal company, talk with your local Miller Metcalfe branch who will be able to help you! If you want to move in before the New Year, we would advise avoiding a completion date after the 24th as many removal companies will be closed during the holidays.

Stock up for christmas

You want to get all of your Christmas shopping done well in advance, yes, this includes the presents, wrapped and packed away! The last thing you want is the added stress of Christmas shopping during the key stages of your house move. You can even do your supermarket shop online and have it delivered in time for Christmas.

Confirm address changes

Make sure to inform your family and friends about your new address (assuming you’ve exchanged contracts) as soon as possible, especially if you want to receive their Christmas cards! To avoid a Christmas without electricity inform the utility companies about your move and the move-in date so that everything is organised and sorted for the time you move in. Also remember to pay your bills before leaving and inform your provider of your move and new address in order to seamlessly resume your payment schedule once you’ve moved.

Children & pets

If you have children and/or pets, we would advise organising childcare for the day of the move. Try to see if family or friends can entertain them for a day. This will help take the extra workload off your hands allowing you to get on with the move without over-excited kids running around, and you can also rest assured knowing your pets are in safe hands!
