4 simple ways to start 2022 mindfully

It’s a new year and there’s no better time than now to start practicing mindfulness.

What is mindfulness

The practice of mindfulness involves focusing your attention on the present moment and accepting it without judgement. Mindfulness is now being researched scientifically, and it has been discovered to be an important factor in stress reduction and overall happiness.

Set goals

Those that have a specific goal in mind are the ones who tend to benefit the most from mindfulness. What do you want to get out of mindfulness? Perhaps you want to be more present in the moment, or you want to find a healthy approach to deal with overwhelming emotions. Simply making a list of a few goals you would like to attain with mindfulness will benefit you.

Create a mindful habit

Whether it’s some morning meditation, yoga classes, or even something as simple as some deep breathing exercises, starting with just one mindful habit can get your mindful routine off to a great start. Remember, the key is to pick a habit you know you will be able to do and maintain.

Create a mindful space

Choose a calm place that is unaffected by work or play for your mindful tasks. Make it your own personal place and create a relaxing atmosphere. This not only lowers distractions but also aids in getting into the zone when you’re ready.

Review your goals

Many people have trouble sticking to their new year’s resolutions, mindfulness included, hence why it is so important to review your mindful goals and practises towards the middle of the year. Ask yourself, what works well and what could be improved? What’s keeping you from sticking to your routine or making the most of your work? Increase the amount of time you spend on effective behaviours and reduce the amount of time you spend on things that don’t work.

Tips

  • Be kind to your mind! Don’t judge yourself for whatever thoughts may cross your mind, instead, get into the habit of identifying when your mind has wandered off, and gently bring it back.
  • Make time! To access your mindfulness skills, you don’t need a meditation cushion or bench, nor any other specific equipment—all you need is some time and space.
  • Observe the present moment as it is! The goal of mindfulness is not to reach a state of permanent peace or to silence the mind. The purpose is straightforward: we want to pay attention to the present moment without passing judgement on it.
